7.10.5 Standards for Bicycle Facilities
(A) Wide outside lanes shall be incorporated
into the design of all new and/or improved arterial
streets. Bicycle
lanes and/or wide outside lanes shall be incorporated in the design of
all minor collectors. On local
streets low traffic speeds and volumes allow bicyclists and motorists
to safely share the road. Sidewalks are not acceptable as substitutes for
bike lanes. Bike lanes shall be a minimum of four feet in width
(excluding adjacent curb
and gutter).
(B) Consistent with the recommendations of
the Cary Comprehensive Transportation
Plan, development shall
provide appropriate bicycle amenities to encourage cyclists. Signage
indicating the presence and location of such amenities shall be scaled
for easy reading by bicyclists and pedestrians as well as
motorists. Bicycle parking shall
be provided as part of all high density residential,
commercial, retail, office,
industrial, and mixed use development where
appropriate (see bicycle parking requirements
Sections
7.8.2(D).
